Smoking in Public Places Should Be Banned I feel very strongly that smoking in public places should be banned. I will list my reasons for my thinking below and explain why I think this. I cannot stand walking down a street behind someone who is smoking. Every time they exhale I then have to walk into a cloud of their smoke. My clothes smell, because they have been saturated with the smoke, it gets into my hair too. It also affects my health. It was found that seven hundred people die a year from this; passive smoking. This is completely taking away those people’s rights as a human. It is estimated that non-smokers who are exposed to second hand smoke are between twenty and thirty per cent†¦show more content†¦Surprisingly one third of these people were smokers. Evidently smoking in public should be banned because even the smokers would support this ban, showing that they know that smoking in public and having other people breath in their second hand smoke, is damaging those other people’s health and is unfair on them. Thirdly, the amount of smoking related illnesses that have to be treated in hospitals are costing the National Health Service much money each year. One point seven billion pounds is spent each year, this is a ridiculous amount of money that could be spent on something much more useful, like treating patients who have not brought the illnesses on themselves. Can you imagine having a relative who needs an immediate operation for heart failure and cannot go in because there is a smoker in the operating theatre, the relative dies and the smoker survives, is this fair? Additionally, passive smoking is awfully harmful to young children, as they are still developing and having the harmful chemicals inside them will damage their organs. It has been found that passive smoking significantly increases the risk of sudden infant death syndrome. These are unnecessary deaths and if smoking in public places was banned most of these could have been prevented.
